INTRODUCTION

Sustainability at the School of Biological Sciences

At the School of Biological Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, sustainability is more than a concept — it is a commitment embedded in our teaching, research, and community engagement. Guided by our mission of transforming higher education for a sustainable tomorrow, we strive to lead by example in fostering environmentally responsible practices, reducing our ecological footprint, and inspiring a culture of stewardship among our students, staff, and partners.

Through innovative research, green campus initiatives, and active collaboration with local and global communities, we aim to address pressing environmental challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and resource conservation. Our programmes integrate scientific knowledge with real-world action, ensuring that the next generation of biologists is equipped to create a more sustainable and resilient future.

Sustainable Development Goals

In this programme, we are also required to integrate the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) introduced in 2015 by the United Nations (UN). The SDGs serve as a framework to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

Organizer
This Sustainability Programme is organized by the Campus Sustainability Division under the patronage of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Industry, Community Network and Institutional Sustainability (TNC JIM&KI). The programme emphasizes the Green Office concept as well as the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Green Office Concept
The Green Office concept is a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach. It involves implementing practices and policies that reduce environmental impact in daily office operations and usage. The Green Office concept should be integrated into daily routines to minimize the carbon footprint and promote sustainability. It can also lead to cost savings through reduced energy consumption and waste disposal costs, as well as improved staff morale and productivity.
