FOOD WASTE TRANSFORMED INTO VALUE, DRIVING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

PENANG, 13 April 2026 – Setia SPICE Convention Centre has taken a significant step forward in its environmental, social and governance (ESG) efforts with the launch of a food waste management project using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae.

The initiative was formalised through a strategic collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Al-Ansar Integrated Sdn. Bhd., aimed at transforming food waste generated from events into valuable resources.

The project introduces a closed-loop system powered by BSF larvae technology, where food waste collected from events at Setia SPICE is segregated and transported to a processing facility in Tasek Gelugor. There, the larvae efficiently consume organic waste, significantly reducing landfill dependency while producing high-protein biomass for animal feed and nutrient-rich organic fertiliser.

USM plays a key role by providing scientific expertise and technical support to ensure the efficiency and sustainability of the process, while Al-Ansar Integrated manages operational aspects, including waste segregation and processing.

The initiative is also recognised as a social innovation project, coordinated by Dr. Hadura Binti Abu Hasan from the School of Biological Sciences, USM, highlighting strong community involvement in areas such as waste handling, larvae cultivation, and product processing.

The collaboration is expected to generate valuable research data, support the development of sustainable animal feed alternatives, and create economic opportunities within the local community.

Overall, the initiative reflects a growing commitment to circular economy practices, demonstrating how collaboration between academia, industry and the community can deliver practical, scalable solutions to food waste challenges while contributing to environmental sustainability.
