PROFESSOR DR. K. SUDESH KUMAR HONOURED WITH ISBP LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2026

DUBLIN, IRELAND, 8 September 2026 – School of Biological Sciences (SBS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), proudly congratulates Professor Dr. K. Sudesh Kumar on receiving the prestigious ISBP Lifetime Achievement Award 2026 in recognition of his outstanding and sustained contributions to research on biopolymers.

The award was presented during the International Symposium on Biopolymers (ISBP) 2026, held in Dublin, Ireland, from 6 to 9 September 2026. The recognition reflects Prof. Sudesh’s longstanding contribution to the field of biopolymers and his sustained commitment to advancing research in sustainable and bio-based materials.

Prof. Sudesh is a Professor at the School of Biological Sciences, USM, with research expertise spanning microbiology, genetics and polymer chemistry of microbial polyesters, particularly polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and bioplastics. His research also encompasses biomass utilisation and natural rubber biosynthesis and biodegradation.

His more than three decades of work in PHA research have contributed significantly to the development of microbial strains for the production of biopolymers from renewable resources. The ISBP 2026 programme highlights his work in developing efficient bacterial strains for PHA production and pioneering the biological recovery of PHA using mealworms, with research that is progressing towards industrial application.

Beyond his research achievements, Professor Sudesh has also made significant contributions to academic development and international research collaboration. His longstanding collaboration with institutions in Japan, including the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), has contributed to research partnerships, student development and international academic engagement. In May 2026, he was also conferred an Honorary Doctorate by NAIST in recognition of his contributions to research, education and international collaboration.

The ISBP Lifetime Achievement Award adds to a series of significant recognitions received by Prof. Sudesh in 2026 and reflects the breadth and sustained impact of his contributions to the scientific community.

For SBS, this achievement is a source of great pride. Prof. Sudesh’s recognition on an international platform represents not only his individual excellence as a researcher and academic, but also the strength of research and innovation nurtured within the School of Biological Sciences and Universiti Sains Malaysia.
