THREE PPSKH LECTURERS AWARDED SULAM GRANTS TO STRENGTHEN UNIVERSITY–COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

USM, PENANG, 9 October 2026 – Three lecturers from the School of Biological Sciences (SBS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), have successfully secured grants under the Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) initiative to support community-oriented projects that apply academic expertise to address societal needs.

The three projects focus on freshwater fish biodiversity and local fishermen’s livelihoods, parasite control among pets owned by B40 communities and leptospirosis awareness and prevention among residents of public housing areas and wet market communities.

Associate Professor Dr. Khaironizam Md. Zain received a grant of RM5,610.00 for his project entitled “Fish and Local Knowledge: The Valuable Fish Diversity in Tasik Temengor in Supporting Local Fishermen Livelihood.” The project highlights fish diversity in Tasik Temengor and the importance of local knowledge in supporting the livelihoods of local fishing communities.

Meanwhile, Dr. Farah Haziqah Meor Termizi secured RM4,180.00 for her project, “Paws & People: Ecto- and Endoparasite Control for B40 Pet-Owning Communities in Batu Uban Area, Pulau Pinang.” The project focuses on controlling external and internal parasites among pets owned by B40 communities in Batu Uban, Penang, while promoting awareness of animal health and welfare.

Dr. Noraini Philip received a grant of RM4,550.00 for her project entitled “Leptospirosis Awareness and Prevention Among PPR Residents and Wet Market Communities: Recognize, Protect, and Prevent.” The project aims to enhance public awareness of leptospirosis and promote preventive measures among residents of Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) and wet market communities.

These projects reflect PPSKH’s commitment to translating scientific knowledge and academic expertise into meaningful community engagement. Through the SULAM initiative, the projects are expected to strengthen university–community collaboration, facilitate knowledge sharing and contribute to community well-being.

PPSKH congratulates all three recipients on this achievement and wishes them every success in implementing their respective projects. May these initiatives deliver meaningful benefits to the communities involved and further strengthen the contributions of PPSKH and USM to society.
