HEARTIEST CONGRATULATIONS TO PROF. DR. SUDESH KUMAR ON THE CONFERMENT OF AN HONORARY DOCTORATE BY NAIST, JAPAN

NARA, JAPAN, 19 May 2026 – School of Biological Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia proudly congratulates Professor Dr. Sudesh Kumar on being conferred an Honorary Doctorate by Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), Japan, in recognition of his distinguished scientific contributions and his significant role in advancing the internationalization of NAIST through global academic and research collaborations.

NAIST confers honorary doctorates upon distinguished scientists who have demonstrated outstanding achievements and contributions towards strengthening international academic engagement and collaborative research networks. The conferment reflects Professor Dr. Sudesh Kumar’s longstanding commitment to scientific excellence, innovation, and international research cooperation.

In conjunction with the conferment ceremony held on Monday, 18 May 2026, Professor Dr. Sudesh Kumar delivered a commemorative lecture entitled “From Waste to Wealth: Advancing Sustainable Biopolymer Science for a Circular Bioeconomy” at Lecture Hall L11, Biological Science Building, NAIST.

The lecture highlighted recent advancements in sustainable biopolymer science, particularly in the development of bio-based materials and the valorisation of waste resources towards supporting a circular bioeconomy. The session was conducted in English and attended by faculty members, researchers, staff and students of NAIST.

The event was graced by Professor Yoshiharu Doi, Professor Emeritus of the Tokyo Institute of Technology and former President of the Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASRI), who attended as Guest of Honor.

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and NAIST have maintained an active academic partnership through the Academic and Student Exchange Agreement since 23 February 2009, with the collaboration continuing until 29 May 2029.

The Dean and the entire community of School of Biological Sciences, USM extend their sincere congratulations to Professor Dr. Sudesh Kumar on this prestigious international recognition and wish him continued success in advancing scientific research and strengthening the global visibility of USM and Malaysia.
