Research Profile The changes introduced by humans in the coastal regions of the world to meet the increased demands of an ever growing human population have amplified the frequency of disturbances in the marine environment, often at the expense of coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, rocky shores, mudflats, coral reefs and seagrass beds. To address issues and questions arising from the global crisis of marine habitat destruction I have focussed my research interests to include:
  • Human disturbances, specifically eutrophication caused by increased inputs of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus in coastal ecosystems.
  • The dynamics of different types of disturbance in interaction with multiple internal and external stressors.
  • Identifying the impacts of disturbances on benthic macrofauna in coastal ecosystems.
  • Taxonomic and functional group identification of marine invertebrates responsible for maintaining the functions of an ecosystem.
  • The utilization of macrofauna as indicators of ecosystem status and health.
  • Experimental approaches in marine ecology incorporating detailed knowledge on the biology and ecology of different macrofaunal species and the significant influence of habitat complexity on these macrofauna at different spatial and temporal scales.
