Main research interest is taxonomy of fungi. Research has been focused on the vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) of Verticillium dahliae (soil-borne pathogen), morphological and phylogenetic revision of Japanese isolates of Exobasidium, and new description of discomycetes and Taphrina (Ascomycetes)
