Human proteins are increasingly used today in pharmaceutical applications rather than extracts from animals or human plasma due to the lower immune response and reduced risk of transmission of diseases. The selection of a host for the production of a biological molecule has a substantial effect on the isolation and purifi cation protocols employed, along with their respective cost implications. The use of microorganisms in producing metabolic products of commercial significance, particularly human proteins, has often been problematic. Problems include low growth rates, formation of contaminating proteins and secretion of large amount of proteases which degrade the target product. Bioprocessing strategies may be used to alleviate these problems.
