Research Profile

Research has been focused on the marine and coral reef ecology, particularly the invertebrates, since 1982. Has successfully worked on the biology and reproduction of sea cucumbers for the pharmaceutical and food industries. Has been actively involved in conservation studies on the Malaysian reefs as well as the reefs around the region, focussing on the molluscs and echinoderm groups. Had vast experience in the study of corals and other marine benthic organisms. Has been a member of the National Advisory Council of Malaysian Marine Park since 1990. Had led a team of scientists from the university to conduct a project on marine science in Antarctica for three months in 2002/2003, the longest marine science voyage to the Antarctica

Current Research

  • Use of Malaysian massive corals as a proxy indicator of changes in the marine environment.
  • Seed production of the commercially important sea cucumber for Malaysia’s food and pharmaceutical industry.
  • Determination of the reproduction cycle of gamat (Stichopus variegatus Semper) for artifi cial breeding.
  • Pearl oyster culture at Pulau Singa Besar, LangkawiUse of Malaysian massive corals as a proxy indicator of changes in the marine environment.
  • Returning a Malaysian natural heritage of giant clams to Johore island
  • The determination of different types of zooxanthellae (a coral symbiont) in Malaysia’s marine park.
  • The modelling of the coral reef habitat at Pulau Langkawi waters using remote sensing.
