Research Profile

My main research interest is the design and biosynthesis of various types of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). In my lab, we isolate interesting microorganisms from tropical environment and evaluate their PHA-producing ability. We use renewable carbon sources such as the byproducts of the palm oil industry as feedstock for PHA production. In addition, we also look for novel enzymes involved in the PHA biosynthesis, especially PHA synthases. Besides isolating potential microorganisms, we also use culture-independent techniques such as metagenome analysis in order to identify novel enzymes. In order to improve the production of PHAs, we develop efficient fermentation processes and also PHA recovery/purification processes. The resulting PHAs are then used in various applications. We have extensive local and international collaborations. Our international collaborators include researchers from RIKEN, Tokyo University, Hokkaido University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, JIRCAS, Sultan Qaboos University, Lady Doak College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, State University of New York, Lund University, Prince of Songkla University, Hanoi National University of Education, Tomsk State University, Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK, University of Massachusetts and Technical University of Berlin. Our local collaborators include researchers from SIRIM, UPM, UM, UiTM, IMU, UKM, UMS, UniMAP, UTAR and UPNM.
