Research Profile

Research Profile
My research interests can be divided into six main areas. The first area is fermentation technology for the production of microbial enzymes (lignocellulolytic enzymes, lignin-degrading enzymes, xylanases, tannases, cellulases, keratinases, proteases and proteolytic enzymes including thermophilic enzymes) in submerged and solid-state fermentation culture techniques. Cultivation systems by batch or continuous modes by free and immobilized cells in fermenters (stirred-tank, looped and tubular air-lift fermenters) which are fabricated in the laboratory or obtained commercially are employed. The solid-state fermentation is used for the production of enzymes, animal feeds, fermentable sugars, feather meal protein and domestic waste degradations.
 
The second area is on enzyme technology which concentrates more on the application of enzymes in the field of detergency, waste water treatment (biodegradation of textile dyes and textile mill effluents; and also the deinking processes in recycling of waste papers/used papers).
 

The third area is on the bioactive compounds from local marine invertebrates (sea cucumbers, marine algae, marine halophiles) and medicinal plants, which can be used as antimicrobial agents to combat certain diseases. The mechanism of actions of these bioactive compounds against dermatophytic fungi, pathogenic yeasts, bacteria and also some opportunistic fungi are investigated. The use of these compounds for treatment of dermatophytic problems and candidiasis has been developed.
 

The fourth area is the bioprospecting and bioremediation of oil spills and phenantrene contaminated soils.

The fifth area is the extraction of natural pigments with antimicrobial activity  from marine pigmented bacteria for the application in aquaculture feeds and also as natural food colorants and preservatives.

 The sixth area is the study on endophytic fungi isolated from medicinal plant parts that have potential for pharmaceutical, aquaculture and industrial applications.
